I am very interested in looking at correlations between Sri Yukteshwar's Yugas and the Mayan calendar. It seems there are some obvious similarities between the long count mayan calender and the cycle of yugas, specifically our current time and the end of the said calender on Dec 2012. It seems the date of actual being in Dwapara yuga (1900) is VERY close to 2012 if the time frame of when the calculations were made is taken into account. Could the Mayans have simply been showing a shift from Kali to Dwarpura (the end of an age) in the context of their own paradigm?

I personally think the Puranic Yugas are not completely at odds with Sri Yukteshwar's timescales of Yugas.The Puranic timescales talk about how much of Vedic dharma or ethics is followed in each Yuga.Sri Yukteshwar's yugas seem to tell us how much science advances in each Yuga.

It is difficult to believe that entire Puranas were misinterpreted.There may have been some astrological error somewhere.But there are some facts that cannot be contested.Puranic Yugas don't have an ascending or descending arc.They state that Satya Yuga follows the Kaliyuga.It is stated that Lord Kalki comes on earth clears the world of bad elements at the end of Kalyuga or Iron age and starts a Satya yuga or Golden age.But till date we have no evidence of any Kalki being born anywhere.And today is no Satyuga.

Sri Yukteswar's explanation of the yugas appears to be the most plausible. We are now out of the ascending Kali yuga and into the ascending Dwapara yuga. The Kali yuga through which we just exited was a long drawn one as it was two Kali yugas that were back to back i.e. the descending Kali yuga followed by the ascending Kali yuga. The Kali and the Satya yugas are always back to back. The diagram of the yugas in Sri Yukteswar's book, " The Holy Science, " shows this quite clearly.
Rama was said to have lived in the descending Treta yuga. There were already aircraft then. The long drawn Satya yugas before this, i.e. the ascending and descending Satya yugas, must have been a period of tremendous mental powers.

Sri Yukteshwar appears to have pointed out by implication that the Yuga dynamics operate something like an electromagnetic physical motor in their spiritual nature. That is to say, there is a phase shifting of polarity going on at all times due to the binary nature of the OM vibration structuring Maya.

Understanding that the Yugas may really exist and thinking about how they might operate and manifest, can help to perceive in deep meditation their actual dynamics rather than spending one's time therein trying to otherwise ‘make sense’ out of so many inconsistences in the apparent things and various world events which are going on in every point of time.

In ascending Yugas, we tend to be drawn via scientific advancement toward God realization relatively in a Satya Yuga to come, whereas in the descending Yugas, we tend to lose that realization and thus look backward with longing to find it again by trying to understand the true meaning of the symbols and writings of those who lived in higher ages of the past.

At times such as this in the 24,000 year overall cycle, the push and pull in both directions is quite strong and so there are lots of confusions as to ‘what is really what.’ Probably genetic engineering, nano-technology and mind upload on computers, though they may come for a while, would offer only relatively crude and clumsy forms of immortality compared to having actual Self-realized oneness with the Consciousness of God.

How is we never found technological remnants of ancient dwapara yugas, like skyscrapers, cars, airplane, computers, cell phones etc?

And how is it possible that in dwapara yuga we'll live only 200 years while scientists as Ray Kurzweil and Aubrey de Gray and many others are sure we'll become almost immortal before year 2040 through genetic engineer and nanotechnology and mind upload on computers?

It is much easier to find evidence for the current upward cycle and especially the energy nature of Dwapara Yuga.

As we look further back, we quickly fall into myths and conjecture since we do not have a continuous record to point to, especially with the destruction of knowledge in Kali Yuga.

One extraordinary fact that supports the falling age is that ancient Egypt began with fabulous craftsmanship and astronomical knowledge and over the years its civilization did not improve but rather went backwards!

I believe that each year sees more and more information uncovered, for example, the cities in Pakistan and India that appear to have been 'nuked' millenia ago.

The long, backward view is the subject of other books, I chose Dwapara to avoid the pitfalls of partial knowledge and conjecture that interpreting ancient scripture and history entails, although have great respect for the authors who try.

Till transition of ages is fine but in the last one kalyuga the chapter will have a definite close and restart as new again rather reverse?

We are in Dwapara fully since 1900 AD, ascending towards Treta.

The cycles ascend from Kali to Dwapara to Treta to Sataya and then descend in the reverse order, over and over in a wheel of ages, as explained by Sri Yukteswar, Yogananda and Tara Mata.

The ages don't change dramatically rather they have transition periods as one fades into another.

Since we are just transitioning into Dwapara, Kali Yuga thought forms of evil and oppression -- Communism, Fascism, Torture, Censorship and Repression are battling more enlightened currents. We see this playing out on CNN from the Twin Towers to Iraq, Afghanistan and now Iran.

It is a difficult time since there are no true complete evils or complete goods, meaning discernment is required to not 'throw out the baby with the bathtubs' as many zealots are wont to do in their binary thinking.

What makes you think Lord Shiva has not ended Kali Yuga?

Much as Jesus' meaning of "Second Coming", scripture cannot always be read in a literalist sense.

Am a bit confused with the ascending and decending order of the yugas.
E.g. which yug r we now?
To my knowledge, we started with satyuga,tretayuga,dwapara then now kaliyuga(iron age).
The cycled ends with kalyuga.
Then again starts new with satyuga.
eliminating all bad and starting as new again.

BUt here as i read means i guess from kalyuga we r going reverse to dwapara then treta then satyuga.

As all yugas end, if we r in dwapara? when did kalyuga end? and how?
Scriptures mention Lord Shiva the destroyer in the form of lord Kali will end the kalyuga.

Dear Intent,

Tara Mata, on page 79 of her article series "Astrological World Cycles" (available on amazon.com), mentions that the ideal age for man in this age (Dwapara Yuga) is 72 years. In another place in these articles, I believe she says that the ideal (or perhaps maximum, theoretical or using rounded numbers) length of the lifespan of man is 100 years for Kali Yuga, 200 for Dwapara Yuga, 300 for Treta Yuga, and 400 years for Satya Yuga. As Poor Richard pointed out, the claim of ancient extremely long lifespans may be simply errors in calculations or misinterpretations of ancient scriptures. Tara Mata corrects a number of these errors in her articles, though not one concerning the lifespan of man in particular.

I think it is easier to consider the lifespan of an average man in different yugas, rather than the myths of possible lifespans of those who were thought to be gods.

In Sri Yukteswar's book the Holy Science, he is drawing from those same texts but correcting the astronomical calculations. A more detailed explanation is in the book and also Tara's Astrological World Cycles.

At the time of publication, this was an incredibly contentious opinion -- stones were even thrown over it.

Today, the ages and dates of a number of figures are being re-evaluated in light of Sri Yukteswar's insight, however, there are camps on both sides of these discussions.

For the present Yuga, the main focus of the blog, the facts and dates of ascending Dwapara seem to me well established and as we look back in time and into ancient texts and times, the picture becomes less sharply focused perhaps simply because everything was filtered thru Kali Yuga consciousness.

Thanks for posting this article. It did clear out some of my doubts, but many still remain. Most of the ancient Indian texts claim that the age of a human during Sat Yuga was around 100,000 years old. How would this fact fit in with Sri Yukteshwar Giri's theory? Many other examples too, like the rule of Shri Ram was 11,000 years, his son Kush ruled for another 11,000 years and so on. That would then mean Shri Ram lived through all the Yugas. I would be very grateful if you could clarify my doubt. Thanks

This Dwarpara yuga shift is playing out as a consciousness shift from the paradigm of "us-them" into "unity" consciousness. This is definitely why, as your article speaks, the destruction and war has kept going on. They are fighting over the dying belief structures of the prior age...ones of race, gender, tribe, belief, religion, etc. Moving out of this "us-them" OBJECTIVE consciousness requires the knowing of the masses that we are not the objects. We are not our thoughts, feelings, emotions, judgments or identities. We are the witness TO these objects. Yet when we believe we are these objects, we objectify other humans and life itself. This allows the human ego, based on separation and narration, to justify treating others as NOT one with yourself. What do the sages say, even the storyline of Jesus? "Treat thy neighbor as thyself!" Thus, switching out this old programming of object consciousness, the "I am gold, you are tin, thus I rule divinely, and get to tell you how to behave and what you are worth!" mentality, we come to see the world as One. Humanity as One. Life as One movement that progresses through natural cycles. That is us! Thanks so much for your website- the world needs to understand this larger context.
